Promoting social inclusion by supporting people to attend and participate more fully in community events.
'Including You' the concept: what it’s all about
The primary aim of the Including You initiative is to promote social inclusion by supporting more people to attend and participate in community events. The secondary aim is to raise disability awareness within the community.
To achieve inclusion, there must first be access. It is important to ensure that events are planned to achieve maximum accessibility. Factors to consider include accessible parking, transport routes, pick up and drop off zones, accessible viewing areas, accessible points of entry, exit and pathways; and accessible amenities.
Ability Links NSW can work with your organisation, and/ or event organisers, to help make your event more accessible.
The ‘Including You’ event tent
The Including You event tent is a resource designed to boost the capacity of community members to attend events. It is designed to be staffed by trained volunteers to help create and manage a safe and supportive environment for people to retreat to, or to visit, during events.
It contains items such as tee-pees, which can provide a sanctuary for children who become overwhelmed by sensory input such as noise, smells, and crowds. Reducing ‘sensory input’ can allow them to regulate their mood. The tents also contain fidget toys, books, noise-reducing headphones, basic vision aids, a Master Locksmith Association Key (MLAK) and communication cards, information, and some seating. The People: who it’s for, and who’s behind it
The Including You event tent is for people with disabilities, their families and carers, as well as other people with mobility challenges due to illness or injury.
The Including You initiative is one of hundreds of successful projects being run across the state by Ability Links NSW to boost the capacity of communities to be inclusive.
