Become a Friend

“It was nice to have something to look forward to. It was nice to have something to do with someone and to not have to do everything alone” – Compeer Friend

“I really admire my friend. We both get so much out of our friendship. A friendship grows over the years and ours is still growing.” - Compeer Volunteer

Compeer assists people who have a diagnosed mental illness (such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, depression, anxiety and eating disorders) and who need social support to rediscover a sense of fun and friendship.

You will be matched in a one-to-one friendship with a caring volunteer. You will meet together in a public setting and enjoy your planned social activities. Meetings occur on a regular basis, for a period of at least 12 months. This commitment allows you to build an authentic friendship and have a lot of fun in the process. You might enjoy a coffee and chat together, go to a sporting event, have lunch or a picnic, see a movie, or go to a Compeer Social event. It’s up to you both to decide.

If you think you could benefit from a Compeer friendship, ask your health professional to contact compeer to discuss the suitability of the program for you. The health professional could be a case manager, social worker, nurse, psychiatrist or GP, and must be willing to provide ongoing support to the Compeer friendship.
