The St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia belongs to a much wider Vincentian family. The Council General International (CGI) oversees an International Confederation of countries who continue the work of our French founder, the Blessed Frederic Ozanam.

The CGI is led by Renato Lima de Oliveira, from Brazil. Mr de Oliveira was elected as the President General on 5 June, 2016, at the General Meeting held in Rome. He joined the society as a Conference member in 1986 and has held several positions including Conference President and Secretary, Coordinator of the Youth Commission for Nossa Senhora das Gracas Particular Council and coordinator of the Antonio Frederico Ozanam Supported Learning Centre. He made this speech on 5 June 2016.

The IGC meets approximately twice a year in ordinary or extraordinary Assembly. The National President of the Society in Australia is Claire Victory. In the past, the role has included attending meetings at the CGI headquarters in France. Meetings have also been held in Dublin and Rome. The meetings are a forum for leaders of the Society to discuss the spiritual and managerial aspects of their work and learn from, and help one another via formal twinning networks. The international arm of our organisation also consults with the United Nations in its role as a Non-Governmental Organisation to the Economic and Social Council.
