Social Justice
"You must not be content with tiding the poor over the poverty crisis. You must study their condition and injustices which brough about such poverty
with the aim of long term improvement"
Frederic Ozanam
What is Social Justice?
Social Justice put simply, is a fair go for all. It means an equal opportunity for everybody, especially when it comes to basic human rights. For example, the opportunity for all people to access affordable housing, to gain education and to have food and clothing.
Social Justice is not a new thing. Christ was the ultimate advocate for social justice.
To be Christ-like is to truly be advocates for Social Justice within the St Vincent de Paul Society.
The Mission Statement of the St Vincent de Paul Society reflects this,
“Our preferred option in this mission of service is to work with the poor in development, by respecting their dignity, sharing our hope and encouraging them to take control of their own destiny”.
What is the Society’s role in Social Justice?
Ultimately, the Society’s role in Social Justice is to be true to our Mission Statement and to be a voice for the voiceless in our wider Society.
